HELRUNAR „Frostnacht“
(Lupus Lounge)
Most new black metal bands indulge themselves in blatant satanic imagery in order to be considered interesting, Helrunar are quite the exception but 'Frostnacht' does indeed represent the black metal spirit so very absent in most 'true' bands claiming that they are the torchbearers of this unholy flame, while in fact they are actually the ones that are extinguishing it. It is good to hear Helrunar in that respect. Their heathen black metal is compelling, ice-cold and grim but with enough depth to create atmosphere. Production wise this is, for underground standards, a very good recording with a clear sound, mix, and distinction of the instruments. Relying on the musical paths paved by the early Norwegian greats, Helrunar isn't setting new standards but by coming up with a lot of killer riffs and interesting arrangements, this is easily forgiven. The songs are well constructed and offer lots of variety in moods and emotion. From blistering aggression to acoustic guitar interludes. The heavy parts are always accompanied by interesting harmonic parts on top and the acoustics are never out of place. Forget all those übertrue shitty bands and invest in 'Frostnacht' instead.
